Overview
A recyclable Black Matt flat bottom pouch, with a resealable zip lock, easy-open tear notches, expandable side gussets and an expandable flat base. Made from a mono-material with no metallic layer, it can be recycled as a polyethylene film at soft plastics collection points.
Unlike a standard doy-style stand up pouch with a curved gusset, a flat bottom pouch sits squarely and directly on the shelf and holds a structured, box-like shape when filled. You get five panels to work with: front, back, both side gussets and the base.
The pouch measuring 150mm(W) x 260mm(H) + 90mm(G) designed to hold approximately 500g of coffee beans. If you are packing a different product, the actual fill weight or volume may vary depending on its density, shape, particle size, fill level and the headspace required for sealing and presentation.
We recommend ordering a sample to test the pouch with your product before purchase or commercial use.

Why choose a flat bottom pouch?
A flat bottom pouch presents more like a carton than a bag. It sits squarely on the shelf, holds its shape when filled and takes up a neat, block-shaped footprint, which gives your product a premium, considered look and makes the most of shelf space. It is a popular choice for premium dry goods such as tea, granola, protein powder, pet food, nuts, dried fruit and baking ingredients.
It also gives you more space to work with. Where a doy-style stand up pouch has two main panels, a flat bottom pouch has five. The side gussets are ideal for ingredients, serving or usage guidance, batch details or barcodes, keeping the front clear for your brand.
This version is recyclable. The mono-material structure contains no metallic layer, so the pouch can be recycled as a polyethylene film at soft plastics collection points, while the Black Matt finish keeps the pack looking premium.

Uses
What can I pack in it?
Suitable ambient food categories
The final migration report supports use for food packaging across dry, aqueous, acidic and fatty food categories under the stated test conditions and ambient-storage basis. The report identifies the tested pouch as MDOPE/EVOH structure with a PE food-contact material.
Suitable examples include:
- Loose tea, ground coffee, herbal blends and spices
- Herbs, seasoning blends and dry ingredients
- Nuts, seeds, trail mix and dried fruit
- Crisps, popcorn and savoury snacks
- Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and cereal bars
- Flour, sugar, oats, grains, rice and cereals
- Granola, muesli and breakfast cereal
- Protein powder, collagen powder and baking mixes
- Powdered supplements
- Pet food, feed and pet treats
- Products containing fats or oils, such as nuts, seeds, chocolate, biscuits, crisps and cereal bars, within the stated tested conditions
Suitable for packaging of dry, aqueous, acidic and fatty foods within the conditions tested in SGS. For curry, sauce, chilled or frozen-food applications, suitability must be checked by you for the specific filling temperature, product formulation, storage duration and process conditions. Not intended for baby food, hot-fill, pasteurisation, retort, boil-in-bag, oven or microwave use unless separately confirmed.
Barrier note: this structure uses an EVOH layer rather than a metallic layer for its barrier, and it does not provide a light barrier. Barrier performance is therefore different to our metallised laminated ranges. If your product has a long shelf life, or is sensitive to oxygen, moisture or aroma loss, please request the technical specification and validate shelf life with your own product before committing to this range.Non-food applications
This pouch may also be suitable for non-hazardous, non-medical and ambient-temperature non-food products, subject to compatibility and use checks before purchase.
Examples may include:
- Seeds intended for gardening or horticultural use
- Hardware, screws, fixings and small components
- Craft materials and hobby supplies
- Dried flower petals and potpourri
- Wax melts and dry fragrance products, subject to compatibility review
- Soaps, bath salts and dry toiletries, subject to fragrance and ingredient compatibility review
- Stationery, promotional items and small retail accessories
- Non-hazardous powders or granules, subject to dust, static-charge and compatibility assessment
- Pet accessories and non-food pet-care products
- Small household items, replacement parts and e-commerce fulfilment items
- Sample, tester and promotional giveaway packs
For non-food products, you should confirm that the contents will not attack, soften, stain, swell, puncture, permeate or otherwise affect the pouch material, seals, zipper or printed/labelled surfaces.
Not suitable
This pouch is not suitable for the following uses. Contact Rightpak before purchasing or using the pouch for any of these applications:
- Hot-fill products, Microwave applications, Oven applications, Retort processing, Boil-in-bag sous vide applications, Steam sterilisation
- Medical devices, Pharmaceutical products, Sterile barrier packaging, Clinical, diagnostic or laboratory applications
- Baby food or infant nutrition products
- Corrosive, flammable, oxidising, toxic or hazardous chemicals
- Agricultural chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides
- Products requiring a metallic or foil-level barrier, full opacity, or a long shelf life that has not been validated with this structure
This is not an exhaustive list. If your application is unusual, technical, regulated, temperature-sensitive, chemically active, high-value or safety-critical, check compatibility before ordering.
Product suitability and testingYou are responsible for ensuring that this pouch is compatible with and suitable for your intended product before purchase or use. You should carry out your own checks and testing using your specific contents and packaging process, including fill weight, filling method, heat-sealing equipment and settings, storage conditions, transport conditions, temperature exposure and intended end use.
Product descriptions, suggested uses, and capacity guidance are provided for general information only and do not guarantee suitability for every application. If you are unsure whether this pouch is right for your product, please request a sample and contact Rightpak before placing an order or using the packaging.
Capacity guidance
This size is commonly described as a 500g pouch format based on the contents being coffee beans, but the actual weight it will hold depends on your product’s bulk density, particle size, shape, product settling, required headspace and seal area.
For example, the same weight of salt or sugar, whole coffee beans and light popcorn will occupy very different volumes. You also need to allow headspace for a clean seal, which reduces the usable fill.
A flat bottom pouch looks its best when filled close to its intended level, so the side gussets open out fully and the pouch holds its box-like shape. We recommend ordering a sample to confirm the right fill level, shelf presentation and sealing allowance before ordering in volume.
Heat sealing
This pouch is intended to be heat sealed above the zip-lock closure and tear notch. Actual seal settings and performance depend on your sealer, temperature, dwell time, pressure, product contamination in the seal area, pouch handling and production environment.
Please order a sample and validate sealing performance using your own equipment and filled product before proceeding with a larger order or commercial launch.
FAQs
Will this pouch hold 500g of my product?
This pouch is designed to hold approximately 500g of coffee beans. Other products may occupy more or less space depending on their density, shape and particle size. We recommend testing a sample with your own product before ordering in volume.
For guidance on pouch size, see our size chart, which suggests suitable bag sizes using examples including pick-and-mix sweets, protein powder and sugar or salt. This provides a useful starting point for comparing products with different densities and forms.
What are the dimensions of this pouch?
The pouch measures 150mm(W) x 260mm(H) + 90mm(G), Width x Height + Total Bottom Gusset.
What is a flat bottom pouch?
A flat bottom pouch, sometimes called a box pouch, has five panels: a front, a back, two expandable side gussets and an expandable flat base. When filled it sits squarely and directly on the shelf and holds a structured, box-like shape.
How is a flat bottom pouch different from a stand up pouch?
A doy-style stand up pouch has a curved bottom gusset that opens out so it can stand, and two main panels. A flat bottom pouch has a genuinely flat base and expandable side gussets, so it sits directly on the shelf, holds its shape better when filled and gives you five panels for labels and information. If you prefer the doy style, view our Stand Up Pouches.
Can I label the side panels?
Yes. The side gussets are useful for ingredients, serving or usage guidance, batch details and barcodes, keeping the front panel clear for your brand. The side panels are narrower and fold when the pouch is empty, so please test label placement on a filled sample.
Is this pouch recyclable?
Yes, the whole pouch including the resealable zip. It is a mono-material structure, MDOPE / EVOH-PE, with no metallised or aluminium layer, so it can be recycled as a polyethylene film.
Please note it is not currently widely collected at kerbside. It should be taken to a soft plastics or carrier bag collection point, which you will usually find at larger supermarkets.
What makes this pouch recyclable when your other pouches are not?
Our conventional pouches are laminates of different plastics, usually including a metallised VMPET layer, and those layers cannot be separated for recycling. This pouch is built entirely from polyethylene-based layers — MDOPE with an EVOH-PE barrier — so it can be processed as a single material stream.
Is this pouch opaque? Does it block light?
It conceals the contents from view, but it is not completely opaque. Recyclable pouches contain no metallic barrier layer such as VMPET, which is what makes them recyclable, and it is that metallic layer that provides a light barrier in our conventional pouches. If light protection matters for your product, please validate shelf life with your own product, or view our Black Matt, White Matt, or Kraft Paper Flat Bottom Pouches which offer a light barrier but are not recyclable.
Is this pouch compostable or biodegradable?
No. It is recyclable, but it is neither compostable nor biodegradable. Please do not describe or label it as compostable, biodegradable or home compostable.
Can I heat seal this pouch?
The pouch is designed to be heat sealed above the zip closure. Seal settings and results depend on your equipment, product, temperature, dwell time, pressure and production conditions. Please test the pouch with your product before commercial use.
Is this pouch suitable for food packaging?
Food-contact suitability must be confirmed for the exact pouch construction and your intended application. Please request the relevant technical specification and, where applicable, food-contact documentation before ordering or using the pouch.
Can I use this pouch for hot products or liquid products?
No general hot-fill or liquid-product claim is made for this pouch. Please contact Rightpak before using it with hot, warm, wet, liquid, acidic, oily or other specialist products.
How many pouches do I receive?
Products are sold in multiples of 100 pouches and may be supplied in more than one inner bag or carton for safe handling and delivery.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
Yes. The minimum order quantity for ready-made stock pouches is 100 pouches, excluding fully customised pouches.
Stock pouches are sold in multiples of 100, so you can order 100, 200, 300, 400 pouches and above. Fully customised pouches are subject to separate minimum order quantities.
How do bulk-buy discounts work?
Bulk-buy discounts apply when you order larger quantities of the same product and SKU. Different products, sizes, colours or formats cannot be combined to qualify for a quantity discount.
Does the pouch reseal after opening?
Yes. The pouch includes a resealable zip-lock closure to support convenient reclosure between uses. Please validate its performance with your own filled product and expected use conditions before commercial use.
Can these pouches be printed on?
We would advise against it, and we do not offer it. Applying ink and heat to a finished pouch can affect the inner food-contact layer and risks migration, so the pouch may no longer be suitable for food use. Once a pouch has been over-printed after manufacture, it can no longer be relied upon as suitable for food contact, and our technical and food-contact documentation no longer applies to it.
Custom printed pouches work differently. The design is printed as part of the manufacturing process, before the pouch is laminated and formed, so the print is sealed within the structure, and the food-contact layer is unaffected. Get In Touch with us discuss custom printed pouches or Get a Quote.
What is the difference between stock pouches and custom printed pouches?
Stock pouches are ready-made, held in stock and supplied unprinted, so you add your own labels. Minimum order quantity is 100 pouches.
Custom printed pouches are manufactured to order with your design printed into the pouch during production, rather than applied afterwards. You choose the size, material, finish and features, and the print covers the full pouch. Minimum order quantities and lead times apply, and we will guide you through artwork requirements.
If you would like your branding on a stock pouch in the meantime, labels are the right route, and many of our customers start there before moving to custom printed pouches as volumes grow.
Are technical and compliance documents available?
Relevant documents may be available for approved business customers. Request access before ordering or using the pouch where your application requires food-contact, technical, regulatory or quality approval.
